Inspiring change, one song at a time

Femi Kuti's an accomplished musician, activist, saxophonist and four time Grammy nominee. We go one on one with him on 53 Extra this week.

12 June 11:45

Without out a doubt, Fela Kuti is lauded as the godfather of Afro-beat and a visionary of his time. His bold and unapologetically political compositions have inspired numerous artists from Don Jazzy and Asa to Beyonce who paid homage to him in her song 'End of Time'.  Nowhere is his influence more evident however than in the creative work of his eldest son, Femi Kuti a Nigerian treasure in his own right. It's no wonder too considering Femi got started playing in his father's band at the young age of 15.

Most telling however is the way Femi has followed in his father's footsteps by condeming the appauling levels of poverty in the world and using his music as a medium to create healing and awareness. From his charitable initiatives to his sharp expositions on black people's continued struggle for peace and prosperity, Femi clearly grabbed the baton and kept forging forward.

He made headlines after signing a brand new deal with Chocolate City in 2014 and has since been busy touring across the globe including a sold out run for 'Felabration' in the United Sates which wrapped late last year. Even more recently he set a new world record using a technique called circular breathing to hold a note on the saxophone for a staggering, 51 min and 35 seconds. He also remains commited to his #OurChildren campaign which sees him travel far and wide, delighting little ones with his beautiful music.
